Neighbourhood libraries are generally smaller in footprint but offer the same borrowing rights and digital access as regional libraries. They typically focus on general fiction, children's materials and popular non-fiction rather than specialist research collections.
Common features across neighbourhood libraries:
- Self-service borrowing and return kiosks (no need to queue at counters)
- Reading corners and quiet study seating
- Access to NLB's public Wi-Fi network
- Regular programmes: storytelling sessions, craft workshops, digital literacy classes
- 24-hour book return slots (located outside many branches)
The NLB catalogue is fully unified — a book that exists in the national collection can be reserved from any library and delivered to your preferred pickup branch, usually within 2–4 working days, for a SGD 1.55 reservation fee.
Specialist Libraries and Reading Spaces
NLB operates several branches with distinct specialisations beyond the general collection:
- library@orchard — Located in Orchard Gateway, this branch focuses on design, applied arts, fashion and visual culture. Popular with design students and creative professionals.
- library@esplanade — Specialises in performing arts, music scores, drama scripts and film studies. Attached to the Esplanade Theatres complex, it holds one of the strongest music reference collections in the region.
- The Pod @ National Library — A multimedia studio space for recording, podcasting and digital content creation, available to book for NLB members.
- Minds Café @ library@harbourfront — A reading space integrated with an activity zone in VivoCity mall, oriented towards families with young children.
Library Opening Hours and Access
Most NLB branches are open seven days a week, 10am–9pm. Some neighbourhood libraries have shorter hours on Sundays and public holidays. The National Library Reference Library on Victoria Street is open the same hours but closes at 9pm sharp.
Current opening hours for any branch can be checked in the NLB Mobile app under "Libraries" — this is the most reliable source as hours occasionally adjust for public holidays or building maintenance.
Study Spaces and Booking
All regional libraries have free open seating. Individual study rooms (4–8 person capacity) can be booked online via the NLB website up to 14 days in advance. Booking is free and available to registered NLB members. Demand for study rooms peaks during PSLE and O-Level examination periods (September–November).
The National Library's Lee Kong Chian Reference Library floors also offer individual carrels for extended research sessions, bookable on the same platform.
